Pushpa Snana flower bath at the Hela Moksha Ayurveda Clinic – relaxing Panchakarma treatment for body, mind, and soul in Sri Lanka

Panchakarma is considered the most profound cleansing treatment in Ayurvedic medicine. While many Western treatments often present a reduced version, in Sri Lanka you will experience Panchakarma therapy in its authentic, medically sound form – as it has been practiced in Ayurveda for thousands of years.

At our Hela Moksha Ayurveda clinic, we combine the traditional healing art of Hela Wedakama with medical supervision by our experienced Ayurvedic physician, pure herbal medicine, and compassionate care – for lasting healing of body, mind, and soul.

1. Basics: What does Panchakarma mean?

The word Panchakarma translates as "five actions." It describes five main medical procedures for cleansing the body of ama—metabolic waste and toxins that have accumulated in the organism.

This treatment is not a wellness massage, but a medical procedure that:

  • renews the metabolism,

  • cleanses the organs,

  • strengthens the immune system,

  • releases mental blockages and

  • returns the body to its original balance.

2. The course of a Panchakarma treatment in Sri Lanka

A classic Panchakarma treatment lasts at least 2–3 weeks to achieve its full effect. It is divided into three phases and is prescribed individually by a doctor . Not every guest receives the same treatments. The course is tailored to your constitution, your symptoms, and your individual needs.

🔹 Phase 1: Purva Karma – Preparation

Pulse diagnosis by our Ayurvedic doctor at the Hela Moksha Ayurvedic Clinic – individual diagnostics for planning the Panchakarma treatment in Sri Lanka

The goal is to open the body and prepare it for cleansing.

  • Medical history: Our physician Dr. Thenkutti creates an individualized treatment program based on pulse diagnosis, consultation, and analysis.

  • Internal anointing (Snehana): Intake of medicated ghee preparations that penetrate the body from within and bind toxins.

  • External oiling: Abhyanga (full-body oil massages) that loosen the tissues, open metabolic channels, and calm the nervous system.

  • Sweating (Swedana): Herbal steam baths that open the pores and mobilize toxins.

Effect: The body is gently prepared for the main therapies. Many clients already report better sleep, more peace of mind, and inner lightness.

🔹 Phase 2: Pradhana Karma – Main Cleansing

This is where the actual "five actions" take place. The selection and combination of treatments is individually determined by our physician . Dr. Thenkutti selects the appropriate procedures depending on the patient's constitution, state of health, and the goal of the treatment.

The classic main applications at a glance:

  • Vamana – therapeutic vomiting: Used only when there is a clear medical indication. It is administered gently and under medical supervision.

  • Virechana – Laxative: For cleansing the liver, gallbladder, and intestines. The dosage and type of laxative are individually tailored.

  • Basti – medicinal enemas: A highly effective method for releasing deep-seated toxins from the intestines and balancing Vata. The type, duration, and ingredients of the enema are determined individually by the physician.

  • Nasya – Nose Treatments: Cleanses the head and respiratory tract, promotes mental clarity, and has a calming effect. The oils and drops are prescribed individually.

  • Raktamokshana – Blood Cleansing: Used in a modern, gentle form, only when medically prescribed, to support skin health and reduce inflammation.

In addition, our clinic offers many other Panchakarma treatments, which are individually prescribed by the doctor to optimally harmonize the entire body.

Effect: This phase is intense but extremely healing. Many people report a feeling of "inner liberation"—both physically and mentally.

🔹 Phase 3: Paschat Karma – Development & Integration

Ayurvedic nutrition during the Panchakarma treatment at the Hela Moksha Ayurveda Clinic – balanced meals to support cleansing, digestion, and inner balance in Sri Lanka

After cleansing, the body is stabilized and strengthened again.

  • Light, dosha-appropriate diet: Ayurvedic food that builds digestion and the immune system.

  • Rasayana (rejuvenation therapy): herbal medicine and tonics for strength and vitality.

  • Yoga & Meditation: For the integration of body and mind.

  • Psychological support: Upon request, Manuela Harnisch will support you with psychological counseling if emotional issues arise during the treatment.

Effects: New energy, emotional clarity, and a strengthened immune system. Many clients feel "reborn."

3. State recognition – quality with security

Sri Lanka is one of the few countries in the world where Ayurveda is a state-recognized medical system. This means that doctors and therapists undergo extensive, long-term training, and Ayurveda clinics can receive official state licensing.

Hela Moksha will soon receive the state-recognized Ayurveda clinic certificate. We have already successfully completed our examination process to become a state-recognized Ayurveda clinic, and the official certification will be issued shortly. We already work according to the high standards required:

  • Medical supervision is provided by our experienced Ayurvedic physician, Dr. Thenkutti, in collaboration with other Ayurvedic physicians specializing in specific areas. Doctors from Buddhist temples, practicing Hela Wedakama in its original tradition, come directly to the clinic to address our guests' special needs.

  • Use of pure, tested herbal medicine from traditional production

  • Strict quality guidelines in diagnostics, therapy and hygiene

  • Documented and individually tailored treatment plans

For our guests, this means: You can now rely on medically sound, safe, and authentic treatment – and soon, we will also be officially recognized as an Ayurvedic clinic in Sri Lanka.

4. What does a Panchakarma treatment do?

The effect of Panchakarma is holistic:

  • Physical: Cleansing of metabolic residues, strengthening of digestion, improvement of chronic complaints (e.g. skin diseases, joint problems, digestive disorders, stress-related illnesses).

  • Psychological: Inner peace, more clarity, reduction of stress, support in cases of burnout or emotional blockages.

  • Spiritual: Many patients experience Panchakarma as a path to greater mindfulness, awareness, and inner balance.

Scientific studies also demonstrate positive effects on blood values, the immune system and stress hormones.

5. Why Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka is one of the few countries where Ayurveda is not just a tradition but part of the state health system.

  • Authentic medicinal plants: The herbs grow in their original climate and develop their full healing power.

  • Traditional production: Our medicines come from a Buddhist temple factory and are prepared by hand using natural ingredients.

  • Healing environment: Tropical climate, nature and Buddhist spiritual atmosphere enhance the effects of the treatment.

A Panchakarma treatment in Sri Lanka is a medical healing procedure that deeply cleanses, heals, and transforms.
